New Official Music Video from Mahalia

Birmingham based R&B/soul singer and songwriter Mahalia joins us at TRNSMT on the Friday Tut’s stage.

Unlike most of us at 12 years old, Mahalia was picking up a guitar and penning love songs. With soulful tones and relatable wordplay the preteen had drawn the attention of major record labels by the age of 13; and released her first EP ‘Head Space’ in 2012. Now 19, the Leicestershire native has released her debut album ‘Diary of Me’and has collaborated with a range of artists from across the industry, such as Rudimentalwith ‘We the Generation’and ‘Proud of Me’featuring Little Simz.

When talking of her first official single ‘Sober’, Mahalia gave us a bit of background on the track and it’s rather relatable…

“I wrote ‘Sober’ when I was drunk after coming home from a night out,” Mahalia laughs, “I used to always be that girl who got too drunk and called the guy. Writing ‘Sober’, for me, was about being that person in the toilet crying. As stereotypical as it sounds, the lyrics are about that state of mind, and how when you wake up the next day you take back everything you said and think ‘actually, you’re a dickhead, I’m fine now... me and you are never going to be anything’. But it’s also about being drunk in love, so in that way, it’s got a double meaning.”

Get your tickets to see Mahalia play alongside Example, Mist, Jimothy, The Big Moon, Cassia, Inhaler and Kobi Onyame. They’ll play on the King Tut’s Stage Powered by Utilita Energy on Friday 12th July 2019.
